We had an emergency situation in our house last week. Believe it or not, it started around bedtime one night. My three year old was the one that discovered it. Can you guess what it was? We had [gasp] a monster problem. There were monsters in her room and she could not go to sleep. If this happens at your house, don’t panic! We figured out how to get rid of the monsters once and for all.
I’d love to share our secrets with you. Check out this info graphic summary:
Got it? Here’s a recap with more detail on the whole process:
The first thing we did was put butterflies and sparkles on the bed. Monsters do not like either of these things.
The second thing we did was dress like a princess for bed. Monsters are afraid of princesses.
As it turns out, my three year old was a princess by day, but at nighttime she was wearing these frumpy old pajamas. The monsters couldn’t tell she was a princess at nighttime. Problem easily solved: she just needed to wear a night gown to bed. Princesses wear night gowns to bed. Here is her favorite nightgown:
She loves Mini Boden night gowns because they are SO soft! She has sensitive skin and is pretty particular about the fabrics and soaps.
The last (but MOST IMPORTANT) thing we did to keep monsters away was to make a spray. This magical spray smells SOOOOOO stinky to monsters! Even one whiff of this stuff sends them running home to their mommies.
I’ll tell you the two secret ingredient to this spray. The first one is lavender. Monsters hate lavender. Lavender is also known to have a calming effect. So, it smells awful to mosters at the same time it helps kids calm and fall asleep. Monsters hate when kids fall asleep. If you fall asleep, they have nothing to do but go home.
The second secret ingredient is witch hazel. Witches hate witch hazel. Witch hazel is also a wonderful facial cleanser, and the link included is my favorite brand.
The combination of lavender and witch hazel makes this a dual-acting repel-all spray: monsters and witches. Here is how to make it.

#How to Make Monster Go Away Spray#
Add equal parts distilled water and witch hazel to a measuring cup. The amount will depend on the size of your spray bottle. Mix together.
Next, add 5-10 drops of lavendar essential oil. The amount depends again on the size of your spray bottle and how fragrant you would like your spray.
Stir the ingredients together and pour slowly into the spray bottle. Shake well before use. We labeled our spray “Monster Go Away Spray” to let the monsters know we mean business. Each night after stories, my daughter sprizes this before we turn out the lights.
Low and behold, no monsters have been back to our house. We’re calling this monster elimiation method 100% effective. And we’re all enjoying a little bit more shut eye!
